Elementary Education Program at Eastern Shore Higher Education Center
Overview
ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½’s Elementary Teacher Preparation Program is a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (grades 1-6) and is accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP) and Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). This program, implemented in a cohort model since 2007, is offered at the Eastern Shore Higher Education Center () located on the campus of Chesapeake College. This enables students in the mid-shore area to complete their course work close to home. In addition, advising sessions and registration assistance is offered at the ESHEC site. In addition, potential students must pass the Praxis Core Test. Students who have earned an AAT degree will be admitted to the Elementary Teacher Preparation Program through an articulation agreement between ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ and local community colleges.
Program Highlights
- All classes are offered in the evenings.
- Course are offered in a variety of formats including face-to-face class time with instructors at the ESHEC, fully interactive face-to-face courses using the latest technology in live video, hybrid and online instruction. All courses are taught by ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½’s professional and accomplished staff.
- Students are assigned field placements each semester, usually located close to their home.
- Two eight-week internships are completed in the final semester in which students are supervised by a qualified teaching professional who provides feedback in addition to the mentor teacher.
Eligibility
- Students who have completed the AAT.
- Students who have not completed the AAT must meet entrance requirements to be admitted to the program. These include:
- Completion of a minimum of 56 credits including the required prerequisite courses with a grade of “C” or better
- Successful completion of the Praxis Core exams
- A grade point average of 2.75 or above
Interested candidates should apply at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½'s Admissions Office as a transfer student. Once admitted to ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½, students complete the Professional Teacher Education Preparation Application. Upon being admitted to the program, candidates will receive a GullNet and Groupwise password, which will enable them to register for courses.
