In-Person Services

The Counseling Center specializes in short-term, generalist treatment options. Visit the Center’s Scope of Service webpage to learn more. If long-term or specialized treatment is recommended, our staff can help support students in the process of connecting with resources that best fit their needs.

The Counseling Center staff can provide limited virtual services dependent on individual client circumstances which would otherwise prohibit their access to treatment and which indicate a clinical need to receive services specifically from Center staff (as opposed to other virtual service providers to include TimelyCare).

Under some circumstances, virtual services can be contraindicated for a student, meaning that it could be harmful, based on their particular clinical needs. Should that apply to a student who cannot access in-person services in the Center, staff will make appropriate community-based referrals for in-person services.

  • How to Get Started

In order to initiate non-crisis clinical services, all students will first complete a Brief Needs Assessment. During the appointment the student will work with a clinician to determine which services are the best fit to effectively address the student’s concerns. Brief Needs Assessment last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Prior to the start of the appointment, students are asked to complete basic forms, which take 10 to 15 minutes.

    Initiate a first appointment by:

      • Brief Therapy

        Brief Individual Therapy

The Counseling Center offers a short-term treatment model, so we are able to best serve all ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ students. Sessions with a clinician last up to 50 minutes and are focused on working towards identified treatment goals. If it is decided that brief therapy is not the best fit to address the presenting problems, the Center has many community referral options and can assist with the referral process.

        Couples Therapy

The Counseling Center offers a short-term treatment model for couples (married or not). Sessions last up to 50 minutes and involve conflict resolution, improving communication, and working to address issues related to external stressors, among other identified treatment needs. At least one person in the relationship must be an ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ student.  Couples counseling is initiated with each member of the relationship attending a Brief Needs Assessment. During the Brief Needs Assessment, be sure to indicate that you would like to initiate couples counseling.

      • Referrals

In some cases, it maybe determined that a student would benefit from a referral to an on- or off-campus service. This may include referrals to off-campus therapy, psychiatry, or other mental health referral needs. The Center can help with the process of identifying and connecting with the recommended service. There is also information about connecting to providers in the community on the Center’s Off-Campus Providers website.

      • Single Session

This one-time session option is well-suited to students who seek help related to one specific topic. This is typically helpful when the student already has a good understanding of the concern but is unsure about what steps to take to resolve it. Single Sessions can last up to 50 minutes; however, they are often shorter, ending when the student identifies actions to take. If another appointment is needed, then other treatment options will be discussed.
