Creating a standards-based mathematical writing project

In an attempt to gently introduce Calculus I students to formal mathematical writing, I created a writing project requiring an essay in article form that answers a multi-step, applied problem from the textbook. To ease students into the writing process and not overwhelm them with mathematics, I included supplemental videos, an instructive LaTeX template in Overleaf, and a rubric indicating the requirements for an A, B, or C. This standards-based approach to assessment is simple, clear, and easy to incorporate into a course using traditional or standards-based grading.
