Teaching Philosophy
I strive to provide a collaborative and inclusive course culture where students work together to practice applying the concepts and skills of evolution and ecology to their personal lives, career preparation, and solutions for society. To do this I employ a backwards-designed, flipped course organization with high structure; team-based active learning; metacognition, value-affirmation, and growth mindset training; a course-based undergraduate research experience (ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½PP); application of Vision and Change (AAAS, 2011) core concepts and competencies to address societal challenges; standards-based grading with multiple attempts to demonstrate mastery of learning outcomes on case-based exams; counter-stereotypical scientist role models; and a biophilic method of supporting engagement, mental health, sustainability, and social justice.
