Ten ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ community members have been named Fulbright Student semifinalists for the 2025-26 program. The Fulbright is America’s flagship international exchange program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. This year’s semifinalists represent nearly 50% of the University’s applicants. They received support from ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ faculty and staff who, along with providing application help, assisted with practice Fulbright interviews for all candidates.

Leadership Maryland officially announced the Executive Program’s Class of 2025, consisting of 53 business and community leaders from across the state chosen to participate in the professional development program dedicated to building a better Maryland. They include Dr. Christy Weer, dean of ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½'s Franklin P. Perdue School of Business.

Two ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ students have received the U.S. Department of State's prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, providing them with opportunities to study abroad. Senior chemistry major Andersen Herman recently spent part of his winter term studying health behavior at the American Institute for Foreign Studies in Austria. Junior computer science and English major Sam Dickerson will spend part of his summer studying computer visualization in space at the University of Tartu, Estonia.

Leadership Maryland, the statewide nonprofit offering professional development programs dedicated to building a better Maryland by harnessing the strength of its business and community leaders, has announced the 36 individuals selected to participate in its Emerging Leader Program's second class. Members include Dr. Ryan Shifler, associate dean of ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½'s Richard A. Henson School of Science and Technology at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½.

There is a new effort to help clean up litter in Wicomico County. In partnership with ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½'s Presidential Citizen Scholars (PCS) program, the Wicomico County Department of Public Works and Wicomico Clean, there is a new survey seeking at last 500 participants. “We are investigating roadside litter in the county, specifically looking into what the community thinks and believes about roadside litter in the community," said Ryan Weaver, who oversees the PCS program. "We are asking for our diverse community to speak up."

ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ has announced Dr. Matthew Laurent as the new dean of its College of Health and Human Services. Laurent comes to ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ after seven years at Tarleton State University, having served in roles ranging from Health and Human Performance department head in 2014 to dean of the School of Health and Clinical Professions since 2022. He began his tenure at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ on January 8.

The ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ Baseball team got up bright and early to serve eggs, pancakes and hot coffee to those in need at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½'s Hope and Life Outreach (HALO) Ministries shelter. The team arrived at 6 a.m. to start preparing, and folks were lining up by 7:30 a.m. to receive their breakfast.

President Donald Trump's renewed effort to enforce immigration laws have some questioning the potential economic fallout on Delmarva, a region heavily reliant on industries that often depend on migrant labor. Data from Pew Research estimates there are 580,000 illegal immigrants in Maryland, Delaware and  Virginia. John Hickman, director of the Business, Economic and Community Outreach Network (BEACON) at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½, says the economic impact of mass deportations could be significant, particularly in terms of food prices.
