ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ students and staff at the Blood Bank of Delmarva said they were giving back to their community one donation at a time during a recent blood drive on campus, at which the Blood Bank unveiled its new Donation POD. More than 79,000 blood donations each year serve about 20,000 patients. The non-profit provides blood and blood products to 19 hospitals on the Delmarva Peninsula, and they share their efforts to collect on the Eastern Shore. Research shows that every 2 seconds, in the U.S., someone needs blood or platelets.

The ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ Police Department recently earned its fourth accreditation from the International Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). The department was first accredited in 2013 and is re-evaluated every four years. During the voluntary accreditation process, CALEA representatives evaluated the department’s policies, procedures, management, operations and support services. They also spoke with members of the department, and ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ and the greater communities.

Judges in the 23rd round of ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½’s Philip E. and Carole R. Ratcliffe Foundation Shore Hatchery entrepreneurship competition were wowed by medical device innovation, awarding body-powered upper extremity prosthetics company Marins Med with this semester’s top funding amount: $40,000. The funding, for device manufacturing, will allow the team to continue its mission of creating devices that restore functionality and seamlessly integrate into the daily lives of amputees. In all, judges awarded some $100,000 to five businesses.

Ashley Marcum and Zainab Jabeen are seniors at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ and a part of the Presidential Citizens Scholars Program. The focuses on civic engagement for, allowing students to work with community leaders to better the area. Currently, Marcum and Jabeen are working with Somerset County and Wicomico County officials to conduct a community needs survey.

ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½’s Perdue School of Business is seeking clients for its M.B.A. program’s project consulting course in which seniors gain hands-on experience working with businesses and organizations. Projects may be managed in person or from a distance, using video conferencing, collaborative workspaces, and online presentations for analysis and recommendations. Prospective clients are invited to submit a synopsis of a problem students might solve for their organization.

The ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ Police Department (ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½PD) soon will have more tools than ever to help keep the campus safe thanks to a $750,000 Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) Campus Safety Grant. The grant will allow for the purchase of additional security cameras on campus, as well as a portable camera, new software to will bring many of the systems currently used by police under one operation, a digital message board for use at large campus events, and a utility terrain vehicle. State officials are almost done redrawing of the boundaries of Worcester County’s most environmentally sensitive areas, meaning some landowners will see increased governmental protection overlaid onto their property. One of the largest Critical Area gains for Worcester County is at the border of Somerset County along Dividing Creek, according to Ryan Mello, project manager at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½’s Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative.
